Curriculum Overview

The opportunities for students of Business, on completion of full-time education, are vast. There are many careers within the Business world and qualifications in this subjects are acceptable in many other sectors.


The Business courses offer an exciting insight into relevant business theory and concepts supported by vocational examples. It provides an excellent foundation for a broad range of careers and further study in this field.

Year 9 BTEC  Tech  Award in Enterprise

Topics studied:

Students in year 9 are currently studying the new BTEC Tech Award in Enterprise. This consists of three main components which will be delivered by the end of year 11.  In year 9 students will be taught Learning aim A which is titled ‘Examine the characteristics of enterprises’. Students will learn about enterprise, types and characteristics of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), purpose of enterprise and all about being an entrepreneur.

In year 10 students will be doing component B which will have students Planning for and Running an Enterprise. While in year 11 students will be Promote and Finance for Enterprise.

Students complete both examinations in May/June 2019 of the final year of study.


Year 10 students are following the BTEC Level 2 First Award in Business . They are required to complete two core units and two optional units

  • Enterprise in the Business World (portfolio)
  • Finance for Business(examination)
  • Promoting a Brand (portfolio)
  • Recruitment, Selection and Employment

They will sit the Finance for Business Exam in December 2018.

Students in Year 11 are following the OCR GCSE Business Studies Level 2 course.

They are completing units about business finance, methods of production and external factors that affect a business.

They are required to complete a controlled assessment that consists of 3 investigations.  Investigation 1 is marked out of a total of 10 marks and investigations 2 and 3 are each marked out of a total of 25 marks.

Students are also required to sit 2 examinations in the summer of Year 11.

Assessment arrangement:

Unit A291 – 25% of qualification

Unit A292 – 25% of qualification – controlled assessment

Unit A293 – 50% of qualification

Unit A292 andA293 are externally assessed units and will be examined in May/June of Year 11.

The computer rooms are open after school on a daily basis which allows students to catch up on their work and get support from the business teachers.
