Design Tech

Our Vision:

Within Design and Technology at Erdington Academy we endeavour to make the subject as inspiringcreativerigorous andpractical as possible. We want our students to develop interests and acquire skills across the areas of Food and Catering, Textiles, Graphics, Resistant Materials and Product Design. Using creativity andimagination, we encourage students to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.

At Key Stage 3 and 4, students acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on wider disciplines such as Mathematics, Science, Computing and Art. Pupils learn how to take risks, becomingresourcefulinnovativeenterprising and capable citizens. Students study designs and products from the past and present, understandsustainability 6 Rs in design and embrace changes in new technologyand its impact on daily life and the wider world.

In the department, we promote independent learning and group work.  We aim to equip students with knowledge and skills they will need to gain access to further education and the modern workplace. We create stimulating environments with the display of students work celebrating their achievement. We challenge students to make rapid progress in the subject, producing work of high standard and presentation. In turn, staffs facilitate this through planning and delivering high quality lessons, assessing work and giving feedback on how to make further progress towards their targets and beyond.

 

Careers:

Design and technology is an important subject in the school curriculum. It is about learning how to design and make things – ranging from foods to engineering products.

There are many careers related to design and technology. They are found across a wide variety of industries ranging from agriculture, engineering and construction to healthcare and the food and drink industries.

Such careers can be placed into two broad groups:

·         Careers involving product design and development

·         Practical careers where you make or mend things.

As well as the subject knowledge you gain, studying design and technology helps to develop skills like logical thinking, problem solving, team working, research, ICT and planning – which are all useful in many different career areas.

 

·         Product Design: Illustration, Advertising, Architecture, Display and Exhibitions, Graphic Design, Printing, Interior Design, Theatre Design

·         Hospitality and Catering: manager, assistant manager, head chef, sous chef, patisserie, grade manger, saucier, comis, waitress, waiter

·         Resistant Materials: Furniture Design, Product Design, City and Guild carpentry and trades

·         Textiles: Clothing/textile technologist, Interior and spatial designer, Fashion designer, Textile designer
